DAILY ANNOUNCEMENTS
12/20/01

High School General
We would like all students and staff to report to the auditorium for a brief assembly today from 9:45-9:55. We are anticipating a visit from Zach Steffensen today, and we need to pass on some information to everyone. Faculty, please dismiss students to the auditorium today at 9:45.

Reminder to student drivers: If a bus is stopped with the flashing lights on and the stop arm out, you cannot pass the bus in either direction. This is whether the bus is stopped on a rural route or in town. The fine for this is in excess of $100. Bus drivers, by law, must report all offenders.

Sgt. Ramsey from the Iowa National Guard will be in the high school hallway on today for any students interested in visiting with him.

The High School Band concert will be broadcasted on KIOW Radio 107.3 FM on Monday at 11:30 PM and Tuesday at 8:45 AM. The High School Choir concert will be broadcasted on Sunday at 10:00 PM and Tuesday at 3:15 PM.

TO: All students and employees of the

RE:
Building Construction Update

Update on boiler status
• We will use the old boiler to heat the building until all the water return lines have
been installed in the new tunnel. Without the return lines hooked up the
water that condenses in the heaters (that banging noise you hear when the
boiler first starts running) can not return to the boiler. As a result that
condensation water (150-300 gallons per day) is being pumped through the
system and eventually down the drain. Since the water is treated we do not
have control over the chemical levels in the boiler. Rather than “lime up”
the new boiler we have decided to wait until those lines are in place and we
have better control over the system.
• Two new chimneys (steel) have been installed on the west side of the 1922 building.
Due to the size of our boilers and the engineered chimney size, we would have
been required by the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of
Natural Resources to install emission monitoring devices on the chimney if
we had gone with one unit. As a result it was more cost efficient to install
two independent chimney stacks rather than one very large stack.
• The tunnel
• For the most part the tunnel is finished. The electricians are hanging their long conduit pipes
which will carry the electrical and communications wires.
• Once the conduit and pipes are installed a cap will be poured over the tunnel. That cap will
serve as the ceiling for the tunnel and the floor for the first floor rooms above the
tunnel.

• Color committee
• This committee will select a couple of color combination choices for teachers to pick from
for their classroom cabinetry.
• Wall colors will be uniform throughout the building but cabinets will be used to
give different rooms a different personality.
• The architect will provide the committee with five combinations (which the committee
has already requested).

• Delay on delivery of steel
• More of the steel has arrived. Some is stored west of the school building site and the rest
is stored at the football field. There are a few key pieces which have not yet
arrived. That has delayed installation.

• There is a concern about the east-west hallway and women’s first
floor restroom at the north end of the building. A second floor
will be built above that area and the new beams (each over
1 1/2 tons need to be placed in that area. The installation may
require that hallway and that restroom to be closed. This item
is still being investigated.
MORE DETAILS AS THEY BECOME AVAILABLE.

• Block layers

• Interior walls are being built out of concrete block. The blocklayers are on site and beginning
to install the interior walls. The first floor rooms will now begin to take shape.
• Many of the footings for those walls and the pillars were poured over the past two months
but that work is not very visible.

• Electrical Wiring

• The new (huge) transformer is in place at the southwest corner of the building. This will
allow for the elimination of the pole transformers across the street from the south
side of the 1922 building. It also allows us greater access to additional electricity.
• Over the next couple of weeks the electricians will be cutting holes through 10 inch cement
walls in the “coal bin” and into the industrial arts classroom as they bring in the
new wires to hook up the new electric panels. THERE WILL BE SOME NOISE
AND VIBRATION INVOLVED IN THE CLASSROOMS ABOVE THIS AREA.

• Dual Fuel Requirement

• On the west side of the 1922 building a huge LP tank and vaporizer have been delivered and
partially installed.
• While our new burners in the boilers use natural gas, we are required to have a back-up energy source. Schools are listed as secondary users, therefore there is potential the natural
gas company can shut off our building during peak periods of use. Such an incident is
rare but the LP is a back-up to protect us.

• Art committee

• The role of this committee is to bring some continuity between the
1922, 1956, 1964, and 2001 building as students and adults move
from one structure to another.

Next update will be the week of January 14, 2002.
