RE:         Building Construction Update

May 13  Meeting and Tour
• On May 13 the general contractor, architect,  and school board will meet to assess progress on the renovation project.
• The group will tour the site and hear presentations about construction to date and the projected construction timeline.
• This meeting will be similar to the one held with the school board back in February and the plan is to hold two more such meetings before construction is complete.

Construction Timelines

•  Construction has picked up a great deal the past 45 days.
• We are still roughly 1 1/2 weeks  behind where we had hoped we would be at this point.
• The projected completion date is still in early January, 2003.

Construction Cam
•  The camera has been relocated to give a different view of the construction project.  It is getting more and more difficult to find a location that captures the construction in progress.   As more interior work takes place this will become even more of an issue.
• A new feature is the time-lapsed video production showing the different stages of the construction project up to this date.
• Mr. Blodgett has done a great job pulling this all together in an attempt to keep everyone more informed.

Roofing

• As you can tell from the  “CONSTRUCTION  CAM”  the mostly in place and the air handlers are being placed on the new roof.

Pouring Concrete for Hallways and Rooms

•Second floor hallways and classrooms are about 70% poured.
• Block walls are in place for the first floor restrooms outside the new media center, the cafeteria, kitchen, new locker rooms, Voc. Ag. shop, and industrial arts shop.
• The footings and floors are being poured  currently for the western  1/3 of the building.
• The west exterior walls will be in place by the end of the week    (in time for prom!!!)  and the exterior brick will be put up by early next week.  That brick will be very close in color to the brick on the exterior gymnasium.
• This week’s cement pours will be for the new Voc. Ag classroom, Voc. Ag and Industrial Tech shop areas,  kitchen storage room,  weight room, and visitor locker rooms.

Art Committee

•  Mr. Swenson is heading up this committee.
• This committee has held several meetings and have narrowed down their focus to a few key pieces that will enhance the learning environment of NICS.

Construction Advisory Team  (C.A.T.)

•   This group meets in the old Kindergarten Prep classroom from time-to-time.
• The group consists of Renae Nepstad, Diane Jacobson, Pam Angstman, Dean Gerzema, Brian Blodgett, Heather Gerdes,  Kim Davids,  Lynn Evans, and Larry Hill.
• This group is set up to advise the team on direction we need to move when certain inconveniences arise with construction/demolition.   They serve as a way to get info to all staff members.

Little Bison Childcare Center
•  Over the past four years our school has worked very closely with the local development group and city council around education issues.   Both groups submitted grants to build a daycare/preschool/Head Start building attached to the school.
• The early childhood center will be located on the north side of the gym.  The building will run north and south and be tucked up against the west side of the playground.  A large hallway/multi-purpose area will run along the north wall of the gym and connect the existing building to the new center.
• As a result of this new project the old swings, dome, bridge, and tree will have to be removed.  New equipment will have to be purchased to replace some of the older pieces which no longer are approved.

Playground Renovation

•  We will be removing the asphalt on the playground, redesigning the playground layout, and putting down new asphalt this summer.
• The bulk of this renovation will be paid for by the playground committee (an independent account) and from a grant.  This is not paid for out of the general fund

Kelly, Travis, and I hope these updates help you remain informed.

Faculty
Thursday the girls that went to prom will be going to the Nursing Home to model their prom dresses. Please dismiss them at 2:25. If you are giving a test or must keep them just have the student let Mrs. Friesenborg know.
