GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

A) BROAD PROGRAM GOALS

We must produce students who can adapt to change, respect others, and work cooperatively to become contributing members of society.

B) ANNUAL PROGRESS GOALS

Reading

Long Term Goal: All K-12 students will achieve at high levels in reading comprehension, prepared for success beyond high school.

Annual Goal: To increase percent of students in grades 3-8 and 10 scoring at or above grade level on the vocabulary subtest of the Gates MacGinitie Reading Assessment.

C) On Monday, Sept. 11 Lisa Ralls, the Winnebago County Naturalist, will come to the K-Prep classroom to teach us about butterflies!

D)  You are doing a great job.   As a school district we did not meet our 2005-2006 math goal or our reading goal.  I am proud of the fact our Design Team and advisory committee recommended setting such high goals.  The five year trend shows us making very steady progress.  The margin between meeting and falling short of the 2005-2006 goals came down to the scores from 3 students ------ if those scores had been slightly better both goals would have been met.  That is a victory for students and faculty alike ----- YOU  ARE  DOING  A   GREAT  JOB.   I KNOW WE CAN EVEN DO BETTER---- OUR STAFF DEVELOPMENT AND PROFESSIONAL GROWTH DAYS ARE GIVING US THE TOOLS TO GET BETTER AND BETTER.

E) HOMECOMING 2006 ----- There is a great deal of activity going on this week ---- we will make every attempt to create a good learning environment and at the same time raise school spirit. Fourth Grade should move to the gym at 1:24.   Kindergarten and First Grade move to the gym at 1:26.  Second and Third Grade should begin to move to the gym at 1:28.

Line up after the pep rally on the playground and I will direct each group to the parade route in the proper order.

We need to make sure the Kindergarten and First Grade have tags on their shirt/coat to insure they get on the correct bus at the end of the day.

F)  Take time to vote on Tuesday.   It is your civic duty as a member of a democratic society.  Service on the school board is a volunteer undertaking.  These folks truly are grass roots servants of the voters.  This body sets the priorities and direction of this school district for years to come.  As all rural districts experience declining enrollment school board will be expected to make very difficult decisions regarding programs, staffing, and linking with neighbors.

G)  A.M. recess is 15 minutes long.  K-2 goes form 9:40 – 9:55 ---- no longer --- no shorter.    Grades 3 – 4 recess is from 10:05 – 10:20.

H) Be sure to review fire drill and tornado procedures with your students.

I)  Be sure to get assessment results to Mike Evans as soon as you have calculated the scores.

J) Vicki Berschman will get a new copy of your fire / tornado exit map in the near future.

Post the new map above your main exit door or very near the door.

K)  Remember to meet with Mr. Hill regarding your professional growth goal for 2006-2007.  Set up an appointment in the days following our faculty meeting.

L)  Remember the time change at the end of the day.    Release those riding the Thompson shuttle at 3:25 --- no earlier.   Release town students and all those going to the playground at 3:28

End of the day bus route times:  Depart the Elem/High School and Middle School at 3:33.  Rural routes depart at 3:48

M) Elementary Faculty Meeting ---Sept.  14.  Each teacher will bring their teacher portfolio and share with at least two other teachers what evidence you have collected and how  you interpret  the teacher standards and the mandated criteria.  We will have a brief discussion regarding a team goal for the professional growth plan.

N) “Nothing in the world can take the place of Persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. The slogan 'Press On' has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.” Calvin Coolidge (1872 - 1933)

O)  We are working on a master electronic calendar for all events and room reservations made by internal and external groups.  This will include the ICN, multi-purpose room, Commons, media centers, old cafeteria, and auditorium.  This would give you immediate access to availability of facilities when you are planning activities or events.

P)  Personal leave is dependent on the availability of  a substitute.  Plan ahead.

Q ‘Cyber Citizens of the World Wide Web”   is a play sponsored by the Iowa Department of Education.  The play is geared toward grades 3 – 6.   The play will be webcast to our school on October 4, from 10:30-11:30.  Our 3rd and 4th grade will take part.  The focus of the webcast play is to drive home the importance of InterNet safety.  This has been a thrust of our district presentation team in recent months.

R)  BODY  BASICS  in the hallway.   Orderly lines and quiet voices.   If it takes a few times of practice to master that expectation feel free to repeat the lesson over and over again. THIS IS A MAJOR FOCUS FOR OUR ENTIRE ELEMENTARY STAFF FOR 2006-2007
